Health education should always be age appropriate — the content provided and the approach to teaching health changes as children grow older. For example, as young children develop language, they should be given appropriate anatomical terminology. Personal hygiene teaching, like brushing teeth, toileting and bathing all should start early as well. As children move through different stages of their lives, the health education adapts.

Health education should be a regular, recurring process. It should start early, with age appropriate information and discussion, then be revisited and added to. Looping back, refreshing and updating helps normalize health education so it becomes comfortable for all involved.
